5 Mistakes *Most* Writers Make (+ What To Do Instead)

Feb 12, 2024

As the founder of Serenade Publishing part of my job is reading submissions. Too often I see manuscripts where the writers are all making the same mistakes. And these are manuscripts that have been submitted to publishers and some have already been published online. Mistakes that, armed with the knowledge I’m going to give you today, could have been avoided and these manuscripts could have been accepted by the publishers or agents they were intended for and not only that, but loved by readers.

I recently taught a masterclass on the 5 Mistakes *Most* Writers Make (+ What To Do Instead) and I would love to share the video with you. Click here to get access

Remember you have just one shot to make a memorable first impression. Don't let these easily avoidable mistakes spoil it for you

Avoiding these mistakes is crucial to keep people hooked, ensuring they won't be able to put your manuscript down.

1. Not Enough Conflict:
Conflict is the lifeblood of any engaging story. Without it, your writing may fall flat. To address this, strive to introduce conflict early on and maintain it throughout your narrative. Whether it's internal struggles or external obstacles, conflict adds depth and keeps readers hooked.

2. Poor Character Development:
Well-developed characters are the heart and soul of a compelling story. If your characters feel one-dimensional or lack depth, it's time to invest in their development. Take the time to understand their motivations, flaws, and unique voices. Show their growth and transformation throughout the story to create memorable and relatable characters.

3. Point of View Confusion:
Maintaining a clear and consistent point of view is crucial for a seamless reading experience. Avoid head-hopping or switching perspectives abruptly. Choose a point of view that best serves your story and stick with it. This will help readers connect with your protagonist and immerse themselves in your narrative.

4. Info Dumping:
Information overload can overwhelm readers and disrupt the flow of your writing. Instead of dumping all the information at once, sprinkle it throughout the story organically. Show, don't tell, and let the readers discover the details themselves. This will create a more engaging and immersive reading experience.

5. Too Much Telling:
"Show, don't tell" is a golden rule in writing. While some telling is necessary, relying too much on it can make your writing dull and lackluster. Instead, use descriptive language, vivid imagery, and sensory details to bring your story to life. Engage the readers' senses and let them experience the story alongside your characters.

By avoiding these common writing mistakes and implementing the suggested solutions, you can elevate your writing to the next level. Remember, writing is a journey of continuous improvement. Embrace these challenges, learn from them, and watch your writing flourish.
